Much of Jackson's business district, including the entire "Battle Row," was destroyed by a disastrous fire, April 17, 1888.
Thirty-five years later, disaster struck again. A tornado ripped through the city March 12, 1923, leaving some $100,000 in damages behind. The Episcopal Church, Masonic Hall, Corinthian Baptist Church and three homes were totally destroyed. A path approximately two blocks wide was cut through the heart of the city. Strangely, garages of Rev. C.B. Colter and Henry A. Ueleke were both blown away -- but cars inside the former garages were unharmed.
