House bill OKs sales taxes for economic development; Schramm takes over transportation commission

House bill OKs sales taxes for economic development

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Cities and counties could ask voters to approve local sales taxes for economic development under legislation endorsed by the House. The bill would allow local economic development sales taxes of up to one-half percent without the current need for cities and counties to first get specific approval from the legislature. The language was added to a bill that would allow Lamar Heights, upon voter approval, to impose a sales tax on hotel rooms and food. The amended bill needs another House vote to advance to the Senate. Money generated from the taxes could be used for a wide range of projects.
