The Friends of Fort D are set to celebrate an event on Monday, Sept. 9, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Fort D Historic Site. The reception will mark the return of "George," the original Woodruff gun, a Civil War relic that has been part of the town's history for more than 80 years.
The reception on Sept. 9 will feature the unveiling of George and its new carriage. The event aims to honor the local men who brought George back from the war and to celebrate the town's rich history. Refreshments will be served, and the community is encouraged to attend and participate in this historic celebration.
George, the Woodruff gun, is a survivor of the Civil War, including its involvement in the Battle of Pilot Knob. The cannon was brought to Cape Girardeau by the local 56th Enrolled Missouri Militia under the command of Colonel George C. Thilenius. For years, George was exhibited at Fort D.
Years ago, the cannon tube and its original wooden carriage mysteriously disappeared. The cannon tube was rediscovered in Indiana in 2023, sparking a renewed interest in George's history. Local supporters have since funded the construction of a new authentic replica carriage, which is currently being built.
The community is invited to join in the celebration and take pride in this significant piece of local history. For more information, visit the Fort D Historic Site's website or contact the site directly.
