Who's Who 2012 - Randy Barnhouse

Randy Barnhouse, a retired teacher and owner of Atlantis Swimming Pool Service since 1998, is known for his involvement in the River City Players, Elks Club and American Legion. He's also a swim instructor at Southeast Missouri State University, a treasure salvage diver for more than 26 years, and a supporter of the Humane Society, Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary and the World War II Honor Tour. Barnhouse lives in Cape Girardeau with his wife Debra. He has two stepsons, Jay and Luke Lowes.

__What do you love about your work?__

The swimming pool season is roughly seven months out of the year. I am always ready to begin servicing pools in the spring, and to be frank, I'm ready to close them by the end of the season. It is a great balance. I get to retire every year. I spend the offseason doing home projects, ebay-ing, reading, swimming, doing shipwreck research and making plans for the coming pool season. I like being outside working and helping my customers maintain a sparkling, sanitary pool. The business makes it possible to donate to some very worthy causes in Cape Girardeau and supports salvaging ancient shipwrecks off the coast of Florida.

__What is your No. 1 goal at work?__

My No. 1 goal is to please myself with the pool maintenance I am doing. I have such high standards that if I please myself, my clients are pleased, too.

__What's the secret to your success?__

My background has taught me to hang in there, use available resources, ask questions to experts and be honest. My experience in the Army, teaching and salvage diving have given me confidence when presented with challenges.

__What community issue is most important to you?__

I have a saying: Be kind to children, the elderly and animals. They all depend on us and need our help. Veterans' causes are important, too. I think the "why" is self-explanatory for these groups.
