David Haley, staff accountant with Schott & Van de Ven, Certified Public Accountants in Cape Girardeau, recently completed a two-day training on tax return preparation. Haley learned about the structure of the tax system, tax formulas, computation and alternative minimum tax issues. Haley joined the firm in June, after graduating from Southeast Missouri State University with a degree in accounting.
Saint Francis Medical Center was recognized with two awards in The Communicator Awards 2003 video competition. The Women's HeartAdvantage television commercials received top honors with a Crystal Award of Excellence, and the Wound Healing Center's television commercials received an Award of Distinction. The Communicator Awards 2003 video competition is an international awards competition that recognizes outstanding work in the communications field. Communications industry professionals judged 2,867 entries. The Roberts Group Inc. of Waukesha, Wis., a communications, advertising and marketing agency specializing in health care, created the winning radio campaign.
Phil Boyer of Sikeston recently received a plaque of recognition for his service on the Board of Commissioners of the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority from 1998 to 2003. Boyer was replaced on the board by Bob Kielhofner, who will serve the next four-year term.
Kathy Swan, president of JCS/TEL-LINK in Cape Girardeau, and John Mehner, president and CEO of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, were recently elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce. Swan currently serves as a member of the Education Administrative Council for the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and is a 1999 graduate of Leadership Missouri, a leadership program conducted by the Missouri Chamber, and a member of the alumni association. She is a former vice chairman of the Cape Chamber. Mehner is a 1995 graduate of Leadership Missouri and served as president of the Leadership Missouri alumni association from 1999-2002, past president and board member of the Chamber of Commerce Executives of Missouri, and as the first chairman of the Missouri Chamber Federation. Swan and Mehner will take office at the board meeting which will be held in conjunction with Missouri Chamber Day at the Capitol on Feb. 18-19.
Two employees of Cott Beverages in Sikeston have received honors from the company. Shirley Burton was selected the 2003 recipient of the Ron Duckworth Award. This award is presented to the employee who shows dedication above and beyond assigned work duties. Burton joined Cott in 2000 and is the continuous improvement coordinator. Phillip Vinson was named Employee of the Year for Cott Beverages. He joined the Cott team in 1994. Vinson is a past member of the Warehouse Optimization Team and the Waste Kaizen Event.
Garage Door Co. of Sikeston joined an elite list of garage door dealers in 2003 when it earned accreditation from its trade industry -- the International Door Association. The company passed six tests concerning both the technical and business aspects of the trade, and met other required business criterion. In order to maintain its accreditation, the company representative will have to meet approved continuing education requirements over the next three years. Of the nearly 2,000 IDA members and more than 4,000 retail dealers nationwide, fewer than 300 had achieved the accreditation at the end of 2003. Garage Door Co. also subscribes to IDA's Code of Conduct.
David Ziegenhorn, president of Garage Door Co. of Sikeston, has been elected to the board of directors of the Central States' Door Dealers Association. Ziegenhorn will represent the Missouri chapter, which is headquartered in St. Louis. He joins four other garage door dealers and four other industry representatives on the newly-expanded board. Garage Door Co. was founded 20 years ago and is an authorized dealer of several nationally recognized garage door and accessories manufacturers, including Clopay Garage Doors and Lift-Master and Marantec garage door openers.
Cynthia Propst, branch manger at US Bank's Jackson office, has received the company's quarterly Pinnacle award. This is the second consecutive quarter Propst has received the award, which is the highest retail employee achievement honor. The Pinnacle award is among the incentive and rewards programs offered to all US Bank personnel. Propst received a commemorative gift at a local ceremony.
Jason Scheel, store manager for the Domino's Pizza on North Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau, has been nominated for the chain's National Manager of the Year award for 2003. The winner will be announced in May. The local Domino's store achieved record sales in 2003 and a five-star rating on a corporate evaluation, which is based on product quality, service and image. Scheel has been a store manager for Dominos for seven years. He has worked for the company for 10 years. He intends to open a franchise in Wisconsin later this summer. The Kingshighway store is owned by Lynn Enterprises Inc. of Cape Girardeau.
Rebecca Lohmann with Schott & Van de Ven, Certified Public Accountants, has received her license as a certified public accountant. The Missouri State Board of Accountancy awarded the certificate. Lohmann is a native of Perryville, Mo., and a 2001 graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She is one of 11 full-time CPAs on staff at the firm in Cape Girardeau.
RM Coco, a decorative fabric business in Cape Girardeau, was recently featured on the cover of "Fabrics & Furnishings International," an industry publication printed in Germany. RM Coco imports almost 60 percent of its fabric offerings and expects to double its business in decorative fabrics. RM Coco's president is Jim Rust. Other key partners are Beverly Rust; Clyde Nenninger, vice president of finance; Mike Edwards, vice president of purchasing and marketing; and Mike Watson, vice president of sales.
