Stan Irwin of the financial services firm Edward Jones in Cape Girardeau recently won the firm's exclusive Ted Jones Prospecting Award for outstanding performance. Irwin has been an Edward Jones investment representatives for almost two years. Edward Jones is the only financial services firm advising individual investors exclusively. It is the largest firm in the nation in terms of branch offices with plans for expansion to 10,000 by 2004.

State Bank examiner Julie Vinson of Sikeston attended the Tax Analysis School held July 15-17 at the FDIC Training Center in Arlington, Va. The school, sponsored by the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council, is designed to provide additional analytical skills that are considered useful to the examiners performing credit reviews and analysis. Vinson, a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, has been employed with the Missouri Division of Finance since May 1995.

Winners have been selected for the first annual Cape Girardeau Downtown Merchants Association Capescape Container Planting Contest. Judged by Cyndi Hall of Hall Family Eyecare and master gardener Marge Loiseau Bauerle, three categories of winners were chosen. Innovative plantings first prize went to the Rose Bed Inn at 611 S. Sprigg, Rhea Optical at 1105 Broadway received second place and third went to the Woman's Store at 113 N. Main. First place for aesthetics and wow power went to Port Cape at 19 N. Water, second place went to Red Letter Communications at 231 N. Main and Merriwether Investments at 20 N. Spanish took third. Honorable mention winners were Marilyn's Salon at 231 Independence, Don's Automotive at 1018 Independence and the Plant Lady's Corner at 221 Independence.

The Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention has announced that Southeast Missouri State University president Ken Dobbins has been selected to serve on the President's Leadership Group, a body of higher education presidents and chancellors who have made student substance abuse prevention a priority on their campuses. The PLG was formed to bring national attention to alcohol and other drug issues on college and university campuses. New members like Dobbins were chosen based on their previous alcohol and other drug prevention efforts as well as their future plans for leadership in this area. Dobbins has also been elected president of the Council on Public Higher Education, a group of 13 public four-year colleges and universities in Missouri. His term began July 1. Art Wallhausen, associate to the president at Southeast, will serve as executive director during Dobbins' term as COPHE president. The COPHE presidency has been held by leaders at the University of Missouri the past four years. Dobbins will succeed University of Missouri chancellor Richard Wallace.

A.G. Edwards recently featured Cape Girardeau branch manager Marsha Limbaugh in the company's annual report. The St. Louis-based brokerage firm selected Limbaugh and one of her clients for one of three profiles used to illustrate the firm's commitment to customer service. The firm distributes the annual report nationally to all its shareholders.

Jon Cozean of Farmington was recently installed as president of the Missouri Funeral Directors Association at the annual convention in St. Louis. He owns Cozean Memorial Chapel in Farmington.

A fourth-generation funeral director, Cozean had previously represented Southeast Missouri on the MFDA Board of Directors from 1995-2001. He has since served as one of MFDA's executive officers. Cozean's father, Charles Hugo Cozean, served as chairman of the state Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors in 1967-'68. It is believed this is the first father-son combination to have served as chief executive of the two primary organizations that represent the funeral industry in the state.

GH Home Furnishings of Charleston has received the Pinnacle of Retailing Award given by the National Independent Furniture and Appliance Retailers Association. President Gary Forrester says the Business Performance Review judges several areas of business including organizational development, selling system, sales management, financial controls, merchandising strategies and marketing strategies. The most important part of the review is the results of an independent survey of cross section of the business' customers. Based on this review, GH Home Furnishings earned the highest honor given by the association. Over 2,500 independent businesses were reviewed, according to the association, and Michael Grimes and GH Home Furnishings ranked within the top 1 percent.

Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston recently honored employees during its annual Awards Banquet. Selected the Employee of the Year was Tina Adams. Adams serves as the secretary for the Continu-Care and has worked at MDMC for five years. The Manager of the Year is Amy Gordin, physical therapist, who serves as director of rehabilitation services. She has worked at MDMC for four years. The Employee of the Year is selected by the department directors while the Manager of the Year is voted on by the MDMC administrative team. Both awards are based on the employee's attendance, work habits, attitude and dependability.

Two Sikeston residents attended bank school at the University of Colorado in Boulder in July. Senior State Bank examiner Lisa Colbert of Sikeston attended the Graduate School of Banking on July 13-25. The school is designed to provide a broad knowledge and understanding of the major bank functions and their interrelationships and to develop the skills required to lead and manage effectively. Colbert is a graduate of Southeast Baptist University at Bolivar and has been with the Missouri Division of Finance since August 1989. District supervisor Connie Reid of Sikeston attended the Post Graduate School of Banking held July 13-18. This school provides a comprehensive course of study of banking and management skills. Reid, a graduate of Southern Baptist College at Walnut Ridge, Ark., has been with the Missouri Division of Finance since July 1978.

R. Allen Phillips, a Modern Woodmen of America representative from Cape Girardeau, has completed a five-day educational program at the fraternal life insurance society's home office in Rock Island, Ill. The program reinforced the concepts of sound financial planning for families through Modern Woodmen life insurance plans, annuities and IRAs. Modern Woodmen of America is a financial services organization based in Rock Island, Ill. Modern Woodmen serves more than 750,000 members nationwide, offering life insurance, annuity and investment products, along with fraternal member benefits for families and their communities.

The Southeast Chapter of the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants has elected Edward Gauthier as president. Gauthier, a Jackson resident, is employed by Major Custom Cable. The MSCPA Southeast Chapter consists of 280 CPAs in public practice, industry, government and education. It provides members with continuing education and governmental advocacy, while working to further the future of the accounting profession through student-focused initiatives.

Certified public accountant Melvin Van de Ven of Cape Girardeau recently attended the National Advanced Accounting and Auditing Technical Symposium. The two-day conference was held in Las Vegas and sponsored by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Van de Ven is a partner in Schott & Van de Ven, Certified Public Accountants, and a professional member of the AICPA.

Mary Kay senior sales director Jana Jateff of Cape Girardeau recently returned from Dallas, where she attended the 40th anniversary of Mary Kay Cosmetics Seminar. Jateff received two national awards. She received a carat diamond ring for her sales of more than $32,000 retail in the year. She also received a diamond pin for leading her unit to the $350,000 retail sales mark for the year. For her accomplishments, Jateff was honored at a royalty reception and received her awards on the national court stage. Jateff's unit members attending were Amy Cairns, Tina Tidwell, Kay Waller, Amy Romack, Sarah Arthur, Julie Giannassi, Eve Friese, Sherry Campbell, Ann Yuede, Alyssa Turner and sales director Leslie Thresher.
