Laura Proffer has joined Fireplace Center/River City Masonry, 1028 N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau, as store manager.

The Fireplace Center provides a variety of fireplace accessories -- gas logs, inserts and mantles -- along with stoves. Riverside Masonry does custom masonry work in brick, block and stone.

The business, owned by David and Novetta Blattner, has been at its present address for 18 years.

Geoff Smith has joined the Lee-Rowan Co. at Jackson as manager in shipping and receiving.

Smith, a graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School and Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, will start his new position May 15.

He previously worked in management with Wal-Mart in Taylor, Ill., and Conway, Ark. He also worked with the Sullivan Co. in Springfield, Mo.

Dr. William Marietta, a Cape Girardeau physician, has received the Physician's Recognition Award.

The award, presented by the Missouri State Medical Association and the American Medical Association, is earned by physicians who voluntarily complete 150 hours of continuing medical education courses in a three-year period.

The award is to recognize physicians who are keeping up-to-date in their medical specialities and adding to their medical knowledge.

Dr. Charles H. Cozean Jr. of Cape Girardeau was one of the featured speakers during the recent Georgia Society of Ophthalmology meeting held at Sea Island, Ga.

Cozean's topics included new techniques in cataract, glaucoma and refractive surgery.

Shawn Cook of Jackson has received a promotion at Boatmen's Bank, to consumer loan officer, and will serve the bank at its main Jackson facility, 101 Court St., in all aspects of consumer lending.

Cook joined the bank in 1989 as a customer service associate and was promoted to credit analyst in 1992. He is experienced in all types of credit administration activities.

Cook is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, with a bachelor of science degree in business administration.

Dr. Theodore J. Glenn of Cape Girardeau attended the Missouri State Medical Association's 136th annual convention, held recently at Westin Crown Center in Kansas City.

Healthcare reform and its impact on Missouri physicians and a number of medical topics were discussed during the meeting.

Glenn practices at 53 Doctors' Park in Cape Girardeau.

Timothy R. Davis, data processing manager of EML Inc. in Cape Girardeau, has been selected as a distinguished member of the "Sterling Who's Who Executive Club."

Sterling Who's Who awards membership to individuals who have exhibited excellence and leadership in their field.

Davis has been a computer programmer for 15 years and served as a consultant for a variety of industries before joining EML, which provides data processing services specializing in long-term health care.

John Johnson of Jackson has been named "Driver of the Year" by the Dannie Gilder Inc. trucking company of Jackson.

Johnson, who has been a driver 10 years, also received an award for nine years of accident-free driving. Two years ago, he was honored with a one-million-mile safety award by the firm.

The Jackson-based trucking company recently hosted its annual Safety & Award Banquet at Robert's Restaurant in Benton. Thirty-four drivers were honored for accumulating over 21 millions miles of accident-free driving. They received awards from the American Trucking Association.

Harold Lancaster, Delta, four years; Scott Caldwell, Myrtle, Bill Ferguson, Bloomfield, Donald Jacobs, Cape, and Bob McCollumn, Doniphan, three years; David DeBrock, Marble Hill, Robert Fudge, Licking, David Martin, Marble Hill, Billy Richardson, Cape, Gerald Robins, Marble Hill, and DeWayne Stroder, Leopold, two years; Ronald Anglin, Chaffee, Ronald Dodds, Poplar Bluff, Terry Manes, Sikeston, Gary Putnam, Dexter, Charles Rogers, Chaffee, Michael Terry, Cape, Robert Thompson, Oak Ridge, and Howard Zoellner, Friedheim, one year.
