Save-A-Lot managers honored for sales
Margit Byrd, Jackson Save-A-Lot store manager, and Phyllis Wiedefeld, assistant store manger, recently received divisional honors for sales.
Byrd and Wiedefeld received the company's Top Cart award, for a "Great Food, Great Prices" sales promotion among seven locations in the St. Louis District.
Nick Keich, Save-A-Lot district manager, presented the award at the local store. The honor included a $500 award to be distributed according to owner or corporate guidelines.
Jim and Tim Maevers are owners of the store.
Brumbaugh promoted to manager at Michelson's
Christy Brumbaugh of Cape Girardeau has been promoted to manager of Michelson's Jewelry in Westfield Shoppingtown West Park.
Brumbaugh has been with Michelson about five years, all at the Cape Girardeau location.
Michelson's has mall stores at Carbondale, Ill. , and Paducah, Ky.
Surgeon joins area medical group
Dr. Brian C. Schafer, an orthopaedic surgeon, has joined Orthopaedic Associates of Southeast Missouri, P.C.
Schafer is a graduate of the University of Tennessee-Memphis, and completed his residency at the University of Tennesee-Memphis Campbell Clinic. He has been in orthopaedic clinical practice the past three years with the U.S. Air Force Medical Group.
Orthopaedic Associates has a medical staff of eight orthopaedic surgeons, a physiatrist specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation, an adult nurse practitioner, a pedorthist specializing in foot care through proper footwear and three certified hand and upper extremity therapists.
Deaton named in scholarship competition
Naomi Deaton, a 2001 graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, was one of six winners in the National Sales Scholarship competition sponsored by the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network.
Deaton had to prepare a sales presentation of an actual product. Video tapes were made of her making a presentation to a prospective buyer. The six national winners were then judged by a national panel of sales and marketing professors. Deaton finished third. She received $1,000 and her name was displayed on a plaque outside the main offices of the Dempster Hall School of Business at Southeast Missouri State University.
The program will be offered again, through the Hahs Agency of Northwestern Mutual Financial network in Cape Girardeau for 2001-2002.

Kruse named to ag advisory group
Missouri Farm Bureau President Charles Kruse is one of 36 individuals recently appointed to the federal Agricultural Technical Advisory Trade Committee (ATAC).
Kruse will serve on the Grain, Feed and Oilseeds ATAC, one of five commodity-specific committees. Kruse and his wife, Pam, operate a grain and cotton farm near Dexter, Mo.
"Now, more than ever, American needs a strong presence in world agricultural markets," said Kruse. "We must open more overseas markets to the abundant commodities America's farmers produce so well. Increasing export markets is a priority in improving our own farm economy."
The committees meet several times each year.
Jackson basketmaker honored for sales
Tamila Graham of Jackson, Mo., has been recognized as a National Top Sponsoring Award winner by the Longaberger Company, maker of handcrafted baskets.
Longaberger is a direct-selling company for baskets, pottery and dinnerware, and fabric liners.
Graham received her award during the Longaberger annual convention in Columbus, Ohio.
Accountant attends consulting seminar
David M. Plassman, a CPA with Schott and Van de Ven Certified Public Accountants, has completed a workshop on "Advising and Consulting to the Small Business." The continuing education class focused on effective methods for analyzing client needs. The Missouri Society of CPAs presented the training in St. Louis.
Schott & Van de Ven is a full service public accounting firm in Cape Girardeau, with satellite offices in Marble Hill, Mo., and Marion, Ill.
Property specialist attends conference
Thomas M. Meyer, certified international property specialist at Thomas L. Meyer Realty Co. in Cape Girardeau, recently attended the 33rd annual joint meeting of the Japan-Midwest U.S./Midwest U.S.-Japan Associations, held at Wichita, Kan.
More than 260 delegates -- 100 from Japan -- attended the meeting, co-chaired by Sen. Nancy Kassebaum Baker and Dr. Rokuro Ishikawa, chairman of the Kajima Corp.,
Meyer attended sessions on technology's impact on trade and global market investments. He was invited to attend another meeting in Tokyo next year.
Charleston woman WIB's alumni of year
Anita Easton of Charleston, Mo., has been named the "Welfare to Work Alumni of the Year," by the Workforce Investment Board of Southeast Missouri.
Easton will be by Missouri Gov. Bob Holden during a special recognition at the Governor's Conference to be held at Tan-Tar-A Resort at Lake of the Ozarks this month.
Easton, a single mother of three children, enrolled in the Welfare to Work program at the Charleston Department of Public Safety. She received a Minority Engineering Scholarship and the Academic Scholarship for transfer students, and attended school at Shawnee Community College near Ullin, Ill. She worked part-time on the Shawnee campus and at Payless Shoe Store. She received an associate's degree in mechanical engineering from Shawnee College.
She started an internship with the Illinois Department of Transportation in May. She recently received word that she will be employed by the Illinois Department of Transportation this fall, working 20 hours a week. She also will attend Southern Illinois University to complete her bachelor's degree.
New state chamber board president
Jack R. Moore, president of Stahl Specialty Co., Kingsville, Mo., has been elected chairman of the board by the Missouri Chamber Board of Directors.
Moore, who has been a member of the Missouri Chamber board since 1991, will start his two-year term as chairman at the 2001 annual meeting in November.
Moore has been president of Stahl Specialty since 1987. Stahl is a privately owned permanent mold aluminum foundry. One of the high-volume products is the aluminum lawn mower deck, developed by the company in the 1950s.
The company, founded in 1946, has foundries in Kingsville and Warrensburg.
