Kristi Embry has joined the United Way of Southeast Missouri as its director of education initiatives.
Her position will include coordination of the organization's LIFE and Success By 6 initiatives, according to a news release, while furthering the United Way's effect in its education focus area.
Embry has a Ph.D in English and more than 15 years in communicating with educators, according to the release. She also has taught college-level English for more than 10 years. She replaces recent retirees Jo Peukert and Janice Jones, former coordinators of the organization's education initiatives.

Tim Goodman, president of Benton Hill Investment Co., and Dwain Hahs, president of Stonehenge Investments, both of Jackson, have joined the competition committee for 1ST50K, a recently launched startup competition.
The competition is based at Codefi, a coworking community in Cape Girardeau, and offers applicants a chance to pitch business startup ideas to a group of successful business leaders, entrepreneurs and investors. A venture capital group, Traverse Ventures, funds awards for competition winners based on selection of the committee.
Goodman also serves on the Capaha Bank board of directors and loan committee. He was chief financial officer for Health Services Corporation of America and is a certified public accountant.
Hahs is a former executive for Bausch & Lomb, where he was president of International Businesses and Consumer Products during a more than 30-year career, among other positions. He also serves on the foundation board for Jackson public schools, is chairman of the Southeast Missouri State University Foundation board and is an adjunct instructor at the university.
