Gary Rust II, director of Medialab for Rust Communications, has been appointed director of a new business within Rust named rustmedia that focuses on multimedia marketing for small- and medium-sized businesses.

A graduate of Washington University with more than 20 years experience in media in Japan and the United States, Rust has consulted and provided marketing solutions -- print, online and broadcast -- for clients that include Apple, Anheuser Busch and as chief digital strategist for Rust, which includes a network of newspapers and online sites in eight states. He has won multiple American Advertising Federation (AAF) Addy Awards.

Steve Turner of Rust Communications has been appointed Creative Director of rustmedia. An award-winning cinematographer, director and writer, Turner brings more than 20 years of experience telling stories across media -- commercials, documentaries, film and web content. His responsibilities will include overseeing the creative process that helps small- and medium-sized businesses compete through smart design and messaging -- video, print and digital -- normally available only to larger firms.

Turner earned his degree in English and cinematography from Southern Illinois University and is a former manager of Barnes and Noble in Cape Girardeau and other locations.

Shad Burner joins rustmedia as a marketing and fulfillment executive. As the former marketing coordinator and director of alumni services at Southeast Missouri State University, Burner was instrumental in working with social media and database systems to expand the university's outreach program.

His experience includes co-leading a consultancy that helped small businesses reach a greater audience online through search engine optimization tools.

Burner graduated from Southeast Missouri State University and is former president of the Public Relations Student Society of America.

Saint Francis adds medical partner

Saint Francis Medical Center added Kimberly K. Roos, MD, as a new medical partner and women's health specialist at Cape Care for Women. She completed her medical degree, internship and residency at the University of Colorado Health and Sciences Center in Denver. She specializes in minimally invasive surgery and is board certified by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Roos spent five years at The Women's Health Group, P.C., in Broomfield, Colo., before joining Cape Care for Women.

Dr. Erin Fluegge Woolf, professor of management at Southeast Missouri State University, recently graduated from the Leadership Missouri program of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Woolf was president of her class of 30. The seven month program helps identify leaders in the state and deepen their skills and knowledge to prepare them for future challenges and opportunities.

Smith at veterinarian convention

Dr. Kelly Smith, of Dogwood Veterinary Hospital in Cape Girardeau, attended the 149th American Veterinary Medicine Association convention in San Diego, Aug. 3 through 7. Smith was able to earn up to 42 hours of state licensing board approved education.

Bender recognized at surgeons' meeting

Dr. Edward M. Bender, MD of Cape Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, was recognized in a speech at the 48th annual meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., earlier this year. Michael J. Mack, MD, president of Society of Thoracic Surgeons, cited Bender's work with iPhone and iPad apps to help thoracic surgical education.

Thrivent adds financial associate

Tom Frasher of Perryville, Mo., has joined the Southeast Missouri associates team of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Frasher will offer financial strategies, customer service and financial products out of the Perryville office. He earned a degree in accountancy from the University of Missouri Columbia and is a graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
