Plaza Tire founder wins advertising award
The Tri-State Advertising and Marketing Professionals have announced that Vernon "Pee Wee" Rhodes of Plaza Tire Service has been chosen as the recipient of the 2006 Tri-State AMP Triumph award. The Triumph award is given annually to recognize outstanding achievement in business and marketing. Rhodes founded Plaza Tire Service with a small car wash in 1963 and has since expanded to 46 full service locations in four states and two Performance Quick Lubes, as well as maintaining a wholesale operation. The company remains family owned and operated. Rhodes will share the secrets of his company's success during a luncheon at The Small Business and Marketing Expo to be held Nov. 14 at the Drury Lodge in Cape Girardeau. Drury and Bob Drury of Drury Hotels were the recipients of the first Tri-State AMP Triumph award.
Jackie Majoros of the Cape Girardeau office of A.G. Edwards recently earned the designation of certified financial planner. Majoros now can offer general personal financial planning, investment and risk management advice, retirement planning counseling, estate planning, insurance evaluation and comprehensive portfolio reviews. To earn the designation, Majoros had to demonstrate ability to analyze and develop personal financial plans. She also had to complete a series of financial planning courses and examinations. Majoros, of Cape Girardeau, has been with A.G. Edwards since March 2002.
Several UPS employees have received accolades recently for completing 20 years of service with the company. Joe Welker of Scott City, a service provider/driver with UPS in Willow Springs, began his career in 1986 as a sorter with the company. Dave Tatum of Jackson, a service provider/driver with UPS in Cape Girardeau, began his career in 1986 as a loader with the company. Earl Messmer of Cape Girardeau, a service provider/driver with UPS in Cape Girardeau, began his career in 1986 as a package driver with the company.
Don Denny, director of the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Shawnee Community College in Ullin, Ill., has been named the 2006 State Star for Illinois. Denny was recently recognized for this achievement, along with other state stars, at the Association of Small Business Development Center's national convention in Houston for his exemplary performance as a member of this network. America's Small Business Development Center Network is a partnership between Congress, the Small Business Administration, premiere institutions of higher learning, state governments, chambers of commerce and other partners.
