Oncology nurse gets Nightingale Award

Nancy Steiner Hughes, daughter of Bernice Steiner of Jackson and the late Gilbert Steiner, was named one of six recipients of the Nightingale Award, sponsored by the Colorado Nurses Federation, on May 10.

Hughes is an oncology staff nurse at the Denver Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Estates Park Medical Center. She is a registered nurse and a graduate from the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis.

The Nightingale Award, a bronze statue, recognizes and honors registered nurses for their excellence in human caring. She was selected from 249 Colorado nominees.

Doctor attends national medical meeting

Dr. Zenon Duda recently attended the national meeting of the American Podiatric Medical Association from Aug. 7 to 10. Although a national meeting, podiatric physicians from around the world gathered in Washington, D.C., in order to attend lectures and workshops teaching new techniques for a variety of foot disorders.

Duda attended lectures on diabetes, surgical reviews, new technology developed for acute and chronic wounds, diabetic neuropathy, peripheral vascular diseases, heel pain, osteoporosis and bunion surgery. Duda completed a workshop involving a new treatment for heel pain involving cryotherapy and became familiar with new equipment developed for its use.

His office, Cape Foot Clinic, is on Mount Auburn Road.

Andrews earns fellowship status

Dr. Aaron Andrews of Ruopp Chiropractic and Associates has passed the examination for Advanced Fellowship status of the College Board of Chiropractic Neurology.

He is beginning his third of four years of postgraduate education to be a certified chiropractic neurologist. This advanced education will allow Andrews to accurately diagnose and co-manage certain neurological disorders like stroke, peripheral nerve entrapments, herniated discs, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, brain injuries and other conditions.

Emerson receives legislative award

U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, of Missouri's 8th Congressional District, has received the Oncology Nursing Society Legislative Award for 2003.

The award cites Emerson for her co-sponsorship during the 107th Congress of numerous ONS-supported measures that sought to improve quality care for cancer patients, including the Access to Clinical Trials Act, the Nurse Reinvestment Act and the Access to Cancer Therapies Act.

In addition, through her work on the Appropriations Committee, Emerson has supported increased funding for cancer research, nursing work-force programs and other cancer-related efforts.

Missouri House honors Gudermuth

Miki Gudermuth, the executive director of Southeast Missouri Alliance for Disability Independence, has been honored by the Missouri House of Representatives with a resolution that says she truly embodies the concept of an Outstanding Missourian.

The resolution specifically cites Gudermuth's community leadership and activism, noting that she is dedicated to assisting those with special needs.

The resolution says that Gudermuth helps ensure the highest standards of conduct and professionalism in her chosen field.

Stylist moves from Great Clips to Studio Designs

Nikki Urhahn has moved from Great Clips in Jackson to Studio Designs in Cape Girardeau. Urhahn has done hair for four years, specializing in perms, razor cuts, prom and wedding styles.

Urhahn graduated from Stage One.
