Woodruff promoted at prosecutor's office
Angel Woodruff, who has been serving Cape Girardeau County as an assistant prosecuting attorney for five years, has been promoted to the position of first assistant prosecuting attorney.
Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle said that the first assistant is second in command to the elected prosecutor and supervises the office in the absence of the prosecutor. The position is responsible for handling the major portion of felony cases in the office and has input on policy decisions, Swingle said.
Woodruff began working as an assistant prosecuting attorney on Jan. 1, 1998. Since then, she has handled a wide variety of cases at the office, especially violent crimes, domestic violence, property crimes, sex crimes and drug cases.
She has tried more than 250 bench trials, more than 20 jury trials and has led the office in preparing search warrants for several years.
Born in Cape Girardeau and raised in Jackson, Woodruff attended Jackson public schools and graduated in 1990. She earned an undergraduate degree in English from Southeast Missouri State University, followed by a law degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
League recognizes LPN at veterans home
Missouri Veterans Home licensed practical nurse David Holshouser received a Missouri League of Nursing Certificate of Recognition during National Nurses Week in May.
Holshouser was selected for his leadership and interpersonal skills and continuing professional growth.
The certificate is presented in recognition of dedicated service and professional excellence in nursing. He was also presented with a certificate for a free, one-day Missouri League for Nursing workshop.
The league is a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing and improving standards of quality nursing education, services and health-care delivery.
Cape native promoted at steel company
Cape Girardeau native Kevin Van de Ven was recently promoted to the position of president and chief operating officer of LMP Steel and Wire Co. of Maryville, Mo. Van de Ven is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Van de Ven of Cape Girardeau.
LMP Steel and Wire Co. is a steel processing and manufacturing company and operates business in 20 Midwestern states. The primary lines of business are coal finished steel bar and bridge basic wire.
Van de Ven is a 1983 graduate of Central High School. He joined the LMP company as vice president in 1995.
MedStop worker gets nurse practitioner award
Dianne Jackson, who works at MedStop One in Cape Girardeau, has received the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners State Award for Excellence. This award recognizes nurse practitioners demonstrating excellence in their area of practice.
The recipients will receive their awards at the annual conference this week in Anaheim, Calif.
Accountant attends national conference
Bill Schott, a certified public accountant and managing partner of Schott & Van de Ven CPAs, recently attended the Chief Executive Network's national conference. Schott received a certificate for completing "Management Development and Management by Strengths."
CEN is an organization of senior-level executives where national speakers present ideas to improve their companies and themselves. Study sessions included an update on tax rules for individuals and corporations.
CPA named honorary member of AICPA
Melvin Schmidt, a certified public accountant from Cape Girardeau, was recently named an honorary member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is a retired partner in Schmidt and Frey CPAs in Cape Girardeau.
The honorary member certificate is given to CPAs who have been members of the AICPA for 40 years. The AICPA is the national professional association of CPAs with more than 330,000 members in public practice, business and industry, government and education.
At the 2003 annual meeting, Schmidt was also granted life membership in that society. He has held a Missouri CPA certificate since January 1962.
Man receives recognition for wildlife habitat work
Scott Crumpecker of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in Southeast Missouri recently received national recognition for his work with waterfowl habitat.
Crumpecker was awarded the NRCS National Wildlife Biologist Award on April 17 at a ceremony in San Antonio, Texas. Crumpecker manages the Bootheel Partners Program -- Cropland Flooding Program, which is designed to develop seasonal waterfowl habitat on private lands.
Lynn named director of campus life at SEMO
Lori Lynn, director of recreational sports at Southeast Missouri State University, has been named director of campus life at the university. She will begin her duties on Tuesday.
Lynn will be responsible for Recreational Sports, the University Center, student involvement, Greek Life and Student Government. For the last year, she has also been the interim director of student auxiliary services.
She has a bachelor's degree from Southeast and a master's degree from Southern Illinois University.
Doctor attends medical education meeting
Dr. Michael Wulfers of Cape Girardeau attended the 55th Annual Scientific Assembly of the Missouri Academy of Family Physicians at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, Mo., June 19 to 22.
The family physicians in rural and urban areas of Missouri come together at this meeting to improve skills for helping patients receive better help.
Wulfers attended the four-day meeting along with 150 family physicians, family practice residents and medical students.
SEMO names director of enrollment management
Debbie Below, director of admissions at Southeast Missouri State University, has been named director of enrollment management at the university. She will begin her duties on Tuesday.
In addition to the daily responsibilities of enrollment management, Below will oversee the Office of Administrations, Dining Services and Residence Life. For the past year, she has also been the interim for the position.
She has bachelor's and master's degrees from Southeast. She is currently completing her dissertation for a doctoral degree in higher education from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
New human resources director named at SEMO
Philip Brodeur of Leyden, Mass., and former director of human resources at Marlboro College in Vermont, has been named director of human resources at Southeast Missouri State University. He will begin his duties on July 21.
Debbi Cecil-Robinson, assistant director of human resources, has been the interim director of human resources since Mike Dougherty left in February for a position at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo.
Brodeur has a bachelor's degree from Boston University and attended the Graduate School of Business at the University of Massachusetts.
