NEW BUSINESS ON THE SCENE: BEAUTY SALON TO OPEN

Famous Cuts, a family beauty salon, will open at 2031 Independence Thursday.

The salon, owned by Shim Yi, is the former Midtown Hair Styling salon on Good Hope Street, previously owned by Lorene Speer, who is retiring after more than 25 years in the cosmetologist business.

The salon, said Shim Yi, will provide services for men, women and children.

"We'll offer haircuts, perms and other beauty services," said Shim Yi, who has been a beautician since 1979.

Shim Yi, a graduate of Stage One The Hair School at Cape Girardeau, previously owned a beauty shop.

She owned another type of business here a number of years. She later returned to the beauty business, working at salons here before purchasing Midtown Hair Styling.

Famous Cuts has four beauty stations but will open with one operator.

"We'll expand to four stations in the future," said Shim Yi.

The new business will be open form 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

No appointments are necessary, noted Shim Yi. A number of specials will be available during the grand opening, which starts with the opening of the salon.
