Long-standing downtown jewelry store to close

Lang Jewelry and Fine Gifts will close this fall as its owners retire. The store in downtown Cape Girardeau has been in business 96 years.

The jewelry store has been in the Lang family since 1916 at the same location, 126 N. Main St.

Roger and Judith Anne Lang, who currently own and operate the store, offer fine jewelry and watches in addition to gift lines from San Francisco Music Box Co., Reed and Barton, and Cross Pens.

"While we will certainly enjoy our retirement, we will miss seeing our loyal customers and the familiarity of going to work in historic Old Town Cape each day. It has been an honor and a privilege for the Lang family to serve the area for the past 96 years," said Roger Lang, third- generation owner.

Lang Jewelry and Fine Gifts will be closed to the public from Sept. 8 to 16 to host private shopping events. The Langs will close their doors forever this fall once all inventory and fixtures are sold.

* Sugar Buzz Bakery is now open at 1929 Independence St in Cape Girardeau. Hours are 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The specialty bakery features cream horns, cannolis, eclairs, cupcakes, fudge, cookies, cinnamon rolls, brownies, pies and cakes. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/capesugarbuzz.

* The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce will begin a series of "Brown Bag Business Seminars" next month. The series is a partnership with the Southeast Missouri State University Business Development and Technology Center and The University of Missouri Extension Center.

Seminars will begin at noon each Thursday during September at the chamber office. All seminars are free. Topics include: Sept. 6, "Social Media -- Where to Start?"; Sept. 13, "Customer Service 101"; Sept. 20, "Networking: Is it Working?"; and Sept. 27, "Web Based Tools and Technology for Small Business." RSVPs are encouraged and may be made by calling 243-8131.

* "Business Killers," an educational workshop about the six most common mistakes small business owners can make, will be offered at 6 p.m. Sept. 11 at the University of Missouri Cape Girardeau County Extension Center in Jackson. The class is being led by Ed Schuster of Cornerstone Financial Group in St. Louis, Fritz Sanders of New England Financial of Jackson and Richard Proffer, small-business development specialist for MU Extension.
