Humor and sentiment were the winning ingredients at the seventh annual ADDY Awards ceremony hosted by the Tri-State Advertising and Marketing Professionals at the University Center Ballroom in Cape Girardeau on Jan. 31.

The top two awards went to television spots featuring local television personalities getting bum-rushed by a squad of angry Jackson football players and a little boy asking his mother about the birds and the bees.

KFVS-12 won the Best In Show award for its high-school football promotion, "Football Friday Fakes," and Saint Francis Medical Center took home the People's Choice award for its promotion of its new OB unit. The television spot was titled "Where Do Babies Come From?"

In the KFVS spot, television personalities Bob Reeves, Mike Shain and Chad Fryman get interrupted doing what appear to be regular newscasts, only to be knocked off the screen by football players. Dan Timpe, a promotion director, was credited on the award.

Jeannie Fadler, vice president of patient care services at Saint Francis, accepted the People's Choice award, which was decided by the 130 attendees from the advertising, marketing, public relations and communications field.

In that spot, a little boy asks his mother where babies come from, and the perplexed mother pauses before giving directions to Saint Francis' new birthing center.

In addition to those awards, there were another 45 awards presented at the ceremony.

Tracey Glenn, president of the Tri-State Advertising and Marketing Professionals, said these awards represent the most creative and entertaining television, print and public service advertising.

The entries, except for People's Choice, were judged by industry professionals at Arkansas State University, including professors in the marketing department, printers in the area and media consultants.

Glenn said the club will pay for the ADDYs of Distinction, Best of Show and People's Choice awards to go on to district contests, and they then can go on to national judging. Other groups can pay for their entries to advance.
