The business of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce is business.
In 2010, business was good.
The Jackson chamber membership base is continually growing. In addition, the chamber added new businesses to its list of corporate partners.
The chamber is growing, says executive director Brian Gerau, because it helps its members to grow their businesses.
"Dollar for dollar, the chamber is the very best way to promote and advertise your business," said Gerau, who has presided over the growth spurt since assuming the role of executive director in November 2008.
Chamber membership provides businesses with an opportunity to network with other businesses in their own community and other, with the goal of growing their own businesses.
"The secret is getting out and showing potential members a benefit of joining the chamber," Gerau said. "In return, we want to try to get those businesses in contact with at least one other business."
Specifically, the Jackson Chamber of Commerce offers business networking, consulting and retention services to its members. It is also actively involved in the economic development of Jackson.
Among the perks of membership in the Jackson chamber is free use of the chamber boardroom for business-related activities. Members also receive a comprehensive list of every chamber member, including address, phone number and contact information, which has been a valuable prospecting and networking tool for members.
Members have opportunities to get to know other chamber members in a relaxed setting during its monthly "business after hours" and "business breakfast" meetings.
Another initiative of the Jackson chamber is Leadership Jackson. Now in its fourth year, Leadership Jackson is designed to give business leaders insight into the operation of the city's various businesses. The 19 members of the 2010 class graduated in September after meeting once a month for eight months and touring schools, businesses and industries in Jackson "It gave them a behind-the-scenes look," Gerau said. "It also gave them the chance to network with other professionals they would not normally network with. It is a good way to meet people, advertise your business and see Jackson."
Internet technology is also helping drive the growth of the Jackson chamber.
The chamber's Facebook page, combined with weekly e-mails, keep the chamber's membership up-to-date on upcoming chamber and business events. The Chamber is also updating their website in 2011.
During the coming year, Gerau said the Jackson chamber would be offering programs to help businesses retain more customers, along with classes that offer new ways buisnesses can market themselves.
In its position as a leader of business development in the community, Gerau believes that the chamber should be proactive in promotion of business, not just a cheerleader. Quoting E. M. Kelly, Gerau said "Remember the difference between a boss and a leader. A boss says, 'Ok,= Go' and a leader says 'OK, Let's go!'"
