DR. HOLLEN JOINS SEMO HEALTH

SIKESTON, Mo. -- SEMO Health Network recently welcomed Dr. Kyla Hollen to the Sikeston Dental Center.

MISSOURI VEIN CARE ADDS P.B. LOCATION

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Missouri Vein Care has a new location at 2725 N. Westwood Blvd., Suite 7, Poplar Bluff. Dr. Mina Bradford Massey has been practicing medicine in Southeast Missouri since 2002 and offers office-based treatments for varicose veins, spider veins, leg pain and aesthetics.

KENNETT, Mo. -- Diane Williams was employee of the month for July at National HealthCare.

VOELKER HONORED BY CARDIOVASCULAR SOCIETY

Dr. Donald J. Voelker was honored in Las Vegas at the annual meeting of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography. He is one of only 77 physicians in the world to receive the designation FSCCT, fellow of the society. A graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, Voelker lived in Cape Girardeau for many years and is currently an interventional cardiologist and medical director of the Cardiovascular Computed Tomography Laboratory at the Medical Center of South Arkansas. He is also an adjunct clinical professor of medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock, Ark.

In order to meet the requirements of a fellow of the SCCT, a physician must be a level three master of cardiac computed tomography, board certified in cardiology and board certified in cardiac computed tomography. Physicians must also have publications in peer-reviewed journals on CCT and have participated as a faculty speaker at continuing medical education seminars and be recognized by their peers to have contributed to the advancement of the field. Also, two members of the SCCT board must endorse the fellow by writing a letter of support.

SAINT FRANCIS ADDS NEUROSURGEON, NEW PRACTICE PARTNER

Saint Francis Medical Center recently announced its newest physician practice partner, Cape Spine & Neurosurgery. Dr. Brandon J. Scott leads the newly formed practice, which provides diagnosis of and surgical interventions for complicated disorders of the brain, spine and nerves. Cape Spine & Neurosurgery opened Aug. 2 and at 3250 Gordonville Road, Suite 450, Cape Girardeau.

CROSS TRAILS TO OPEN CLINIC IN ADVANCE

ADVANCE, Mo. -- Cross Trails Medical Center will open a new $1.8 million medical and dental clinic this fall in Advance, Mo., to replace its small medical clinic at 106 N. Oak St. Services offered at the new 7,500-square-foot facility on Gabriel Avenue include primary medical care, general dental services, chronic disease management, behavioral health and case management. The building will have a separate lobby and check-in area for medical and dental patients, six medical exam rooms and six dental exam rooms. It will have laboratory and X-ray services and a separate treatment room for minor surgeries and other urgent medical cases. According to Denny Garner, CEO of Cross Trails Medical Center, the new facility will be operational in October, at which point the old clinic will close. Cross Trails received $623,240 in federal grant funds and $614,000 in state grant funds to help cover the construction costs. The remaining $637,078 will be covered by Cross Trails, a not-for-profit health care organization. The city of Advance and Bank of Advance each donated a portion of the land, and Cross Trails purchased the remaining city block in the center of town where the new clinic is under construction.

DR. DUDA COMPLETES SURGICAL TRAINING COURSE

Dr. Zenon Duda attended a Foot and Ankle Reconstruction Skills Surgical Course in July at the DaVinci Anatomical Surgery Laboratory in Miami. The course featured new hardware and instrumentation developed by Deputy Surgical supplies. It allowed an opportunity to work with anatomical specimens and the biomedical engineer who was project manager for the development of adaptable metallic hardware for the fixation of complex fractures and surgical procedures, Duda said. Duda practices podiatry at Cape Foot Clinic, Cape Girardeau.

NEW DOCTORS JOIN SOUTHEAST HOSPITAL

Southeast Missouri Hospital recently announced the addition of several doctors to its staff. They include Dr. Adekunle O. Obisesan, adult hospitalist; Dr. Timothy N. Thomas, emergency medicine; Dr. Heather Cugini, obstetrics and gynecology; Dr. Tim T. Duke, family medicine, affiliated with Plaza Primary Care in the Southeast Medical Plaza; and Dr. Stephanie Danette Miller, family medicine, affiliated with Plaza Primary Care West.

Dr. Phenu Zachariah recently joined the medical staff Saint Francis Medical Center. He joins Dr. Ahmad Z. Sheikh at Cape Diabetes and Endocrinology in providing diagnosis, management and comprehensive treatment of diabetes and other disorders of the endocrine system. One of Zachariah's special clinical interests is densitometry (studying and testing bone density) to help detect osteoporosis in older patients. Certified as a clinical densitometrist by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry, Zachariah has experience working particularly with older male VA patients. He is also interested in researching new technology and treatments for diabetic patients.

SAINT FRANCIS NAMES DIRECTOR OF TRAINING, DEVELOPMENT

Saint Francis Medical Center welcomed Marie T. Gladue into the newly formed position of director of training and development in the Education Center. In this role, Gladue will be responsible for the overall management, design, development and delivery of enterprise learning for Saint Francis. She reports to Wayne Smith, vice president - development and administrative services. Gladue has an extensive background in human resources, training and organizational development, with more than 12 years at executive and management levels. Most recently, she worked as a gap analyst for her own company, Bridge The Gap Now.

MINERAL AREA ADDS TWO DOCTORS

FARMINGTON, Mo. -- Dr. Erick Calmet joined the medical staff at Mineral Area Regional Medical Center. He has established a family practice in the Mineral Area Medicine and Pediatrics office, 1101 Weber Road, Suite 101, Farmington. Calmet most recently served as chief resident at Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tenn. Additionally, Mineral Area Regional Medical Center and Women's Health and Wellness recently added Dr. Robert R. Harris, specializing in gynecology and obstetrics.

MDMC BREAKS GROUND FOR NEW CLINIC

SIKESTON, Mo. -- A groundbreaking was held Aug. 13 for a new $3 million orthopedic clinic in Sikeston. The building, to be located just north of the Sikeston Jaycee Regional Dialysis Center, will provide offices for orthopedic surgeons Dr. Cary Sanders and Dr. Larry Conley. The two will join Missouri Delta Medical Center's physician services in July 2011. The 17,700-square-foot building will also have space for other offices, according to hospital officials. Sides Construction of Jackson was awarded the bid to construct the facility. Construction was expected to begin immediately, with completion slated for next July.

SOUTHEAST PARTNERS WITH iTRIAGE APP

Southeast Missouri Hospital joined with the makers of iTriage, a smartphone application, in an effort to make its facilities and doctors more accessible to potential patients. The free iTriage app is available for iPhone, iPod touch, Android and Palm and information can be accessed at www.itriagehealth.com. The app helps users search medical symptoms, learn about possible causes, find the nearest locations for treatment and search for doctors and specialists. While the app doesn't exclusively access physicians and facilities affiliated with Southeast Missouri Hospital, through its sponsorship agreement with the company, the hospital is able to provide additional background information, photos and videos as part of the application.

HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION GETS GRANT

DEXTER, Mo. -- Dexter's Regional Healthcare Foundation is one of four not-for-profit organizations to receive part of $600,000 in grants recently from the Missouri Foundation for Health. A $100,000 grant went to the local foundation, and RHF says the money will be used to assist those who have trouble affording medications. Other not-for-profits receiving funding through the MFH include the Mississippi County Health Department in Charleston, Mo.; the House of Refuge of Sikeston, Mo.; and the Butler County Council on Aging Inc. in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

SAINT FRANCIS NAMED HOSPITAL OF CHOICE

Saint Francis Medical Center is one of 100 in the nation to earn the Hospital of Choice Award for 2010 by The American Alliance of Healthcare Providers. The Hospital of Choice Awards were designed by the AAHCP to recognize hospitals that go beyond in pursuit of excellence and quality care and have developed a collaborative relationship with physicians and health care organizations in the community. America's Choice Hospitals for 2010 were rated on the association's 10-point criteria in professional ethics, standards of conduct, patients' rights, performance management, staff development and communication systems.

LARKIN COMPLETES CASE MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATION

Marcia Larkin, care coordinator in Southeast Missouri Hospital's Case Management Department, passed the American Case Management Association certification exam and is now an Accredited Case Manager. Larkin is the third person at Southeast to pass the exam. The ACM certification is designed specifically for hospital case management specialists. Just more than 1,000 hospital case managers nationwide have earned this credential.

LOCAL HOSPITALS PARTNER FOR WOUND CARE

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Saint Francis Medical Center announced a partnership with Perry County Memorial Hospital to bring expert wound care to Perryville. Saint Francis vascular surgeon Dr. William Tung and thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon Dr. John C. Wiggans opened a new wound clinic at Perry County Memorial Hospital in August. Through this collaboration between the two hospitals, specialists are now available in Perryville to provide expert care and develop individualized treatment plans that help patients experience faster healing rates, quicker return to normal activities and improved quality of life.

SAINT FRANCIS WELCOMES NEUROLOGIST

Saint Francis Medical Center recently welcomed neurologist Dr. Donna L. Lorenzo-Bueltel. She joins neurologist Dr. Andrew Godbey at Cape Neurology Specialists in diagnosing and treating complicated disorders and injuries of the brain and nervous system. Lorenzo-Bueltel has worked on the front line of neurology for 13 years in private practice.
