It's been going around for months now that Dino's Pizza, 1034 Broadway, would reopen, but owner Kostas "Gus" Demopoulos says he will definitely be open by Nov. 15. He is seeking a liquor license at tonight's Cape Girardeau City Council meeting and the interior of the building has been extensively renovated. The restaurant is well-known for its pizza, Greek food, fried chicken and mojos. Demopoulos also operates Dino's Grill and Sports Bar in Anna, Ill., but he is selling that business. The Demopoulos family has been in the restaurant business in Cape Girardeau for 43 years and has operated its Anna location for 30 years.
n Collecting treats: Roupp & Roupp Dentistry is collecting Treats for Troops from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. today. People are encouraged to bring in their Halloween candy to receive $1 for each pound donated and a flashing toothbrush. The candy will be shipped to troops overseas by Blue Star Mothers. People may also bring notes with personal messages for the troops. There is a limit of five pounds of candy per person.
* Lutheran Home addition: The Lutheran Home recently built on an addition to its therapy department. Now complete, all therapy disciplines are able to function in the same area, said Kelly Sander, director of rehabilitation. The space has a fully functioning kitchen, bathroom and bedroom area to simulate a patient's home environment. "By focusing on home-specific tasks, the residents are provided the best possible opportunity to meet their goals and return home," Sander said. The demographics of the patients have changed over the past few years, he said, with the majority of patients coming from the hospital following a surgery rather than being long-term residents of The Lutheran Home. The average length of stay is about a month.
* New pharmacy to open: Southeast Pharmacy will open Nov. 5 in the Plaza Primary Care West building at 817 S. Mount Auburn Road, Suite 130. Pharmacist Kimberly Etherton will manage the retail pharmacy operated by the Southeast Missouri Hospital Association, according to a business license filed with the city of Cape Girardeau.
* Backwood Creations opens in Benton, Mo.: A new home decor store has opened at 355 N. Winchester St. in Benton. Backwood Creations offer primitive home decor, collectibles, crafts and more. The store also carries 1803 Candles, which are hand-poured with pure soy wax, premium fragrance and botanical oils. Backwood Creations is owned by Jason Ourth and Stacy Forck.
* Moving: Campus Scooters is moving from 832 Broadway a location twice its current store's size just down the street. Campus Scooters will open at the new building at 817 Broadway today. Plans are being made for indoor skate park to open later this year at the new store.
Comfort Keepers, in-home assisted living services, has moved its offices to 615 N. Broadview St. in Cape Girardeau.
* Southeast receives heart association award: Southeast Missouri Hospital has received the Get With the Guidelines Heart Failure Silver Performance Achievement Award from the American Heart Association in recognition of the hospital's efforts to provide excellent heart care to its patients.
The national recognition means Southeast has reached the goal of treating heart failure patients with 85 percent compliance for one year to standards outlined by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology.
* Southeast gets high marks for patient satisfaction: According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Southeast had some of the nation's highest patient satisfaction scores in 2009.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services oversees random patient surveys of some 4,000 hospitals nationwide through a program called HCAHPS or Hospital Consumer Assessment of Health care Providers and Systems. Southeast not only ranked above the 95th percentile for overall HCAHPS scores but was among the top three of Missouri's hospitals in six of the 10 survey categories. The hospital ranked first in Missouri in the categories of pain control and communication with nurses. Southeast also ranked second in the state on the recommendation question in which 87 percent of those surveyed said "definitely yes" when asked if they would recommend the hospital. Southeast also had the state's third-highest score in the overall rating of care category in which 83 percent of the randomly selected survey participants rated their hospital experience either a 9 or a 10 on a scale of 0 to 10.
* Farmer wins Gator ATV: In partnership with Sydenstricker Implements, the Missouri Corn Growers Association awarded Carl Landewee, a grain farmer from Chaffee, Mo., a 2010 John Deere TS 4x2 Gator as part of a recent membership promotion. Director of grower services Gary Wheeler and board member Jim Stuever of Dexter, Mo., recently presented Landewee with the ATV at his farm.
