Cape Girardeau-area stamp buyers, post office box holders and retail customers soon will have a new Cape Girardeau Post Office location.

The Post Office will temporarily relocate its retail operation from 320 N. Frederick St. to Christine Corner, a business plaza at the corner of Good Hope and Christine Street, just south of William Street and the Town Plaza. The facility is also one block east of Kingshighway.

The relocation will be the first for Cape postal customers in 38 years.

Structural roof problems at the current Post Office necessitates the temporary move, according to local Postmaster Mike Keefe. In January, the letter carriers were relocated to the regional processing center on Kell Farm Drive, just off Bloomfield Road.

Tom Kelsey, commercial broker with Lorimont Place Ltd., who handled the leasing transaction at the Christine Street location, which is owned by the Clybourn Co., said the new retail operation would consist of nearly 5,000 square feet that will be modified to accommodate the postal operation.

"The construction work on the space has already begun, and the entire retail operation will be moved from Frederick Street as soon as possible," said Kelsey.

Kelsey said Postal Service officials looked at several locations and decided to relocate to 284 Christine St. because of its central location, suitability for operational needs and immediate availability.
