Mary Kay Day has been named executive director of the Safe House For Women Inc. in Cape Girardeau.

Day, who has served on the group's board of directors, resigned her position as president of the board to become executive director.

She succeeds Bonnie Gerecke, who retired as full-time director. Gerecke, who recently became a mother, will serve on the board.

Day worked for more than 20 years in banking and has also served as a volunteer for Girl Scouts of America, serving on the GSA Board. She continues to serve on the advisory board for Consumer Credit Counseling Service.

The Safe House, a not-for-profit organization established in 1991, provides shelter and support to women and their children who are victims of domestic violence.

Chris Kurz is new manager of the Briggs & Stratton plant in Poplar Bluff

Kurz succeeds Mike Thompson, the plant's manager of eight years. Thompson has been promoted to oversee Briggs & Stratton operations in Auburn, Ala., Statesboro, Ga., and Milwaukee.

Kurz has been manager of Starting USA Corp., a joint manufacturing endeavor between Starting Japan and Briggs & Stratton at Poplar Bluff.

Starting USA Corp., which opened in Poplar Bluff in 1994, produces starter assemblies for Briggs, Echo Inc. and Kawasaki.

Before Starting USA, Kurz had been area manager at Briggs & Stratton's Murray, Ky., plant for eight years.

Don Seabaugh of Cape Girardeau has been named "Salesman of the Year" for Wieser Honda Mazda Co., 2611 Auto Park Drive.

Seabaugh has worked in auto sales for more than three years, most of it with Wieser Honda Mazda.

John McMullin of John's Pharmacy in Cape Girardeau, has completed a certification program in diabetic training and education.

The program, sponsored by American Pharmaceutical Association, Pfizer Inc. and American Association of Diabetics Educators, involved three tests and a three-day workshop at Dallas.

John's Pharmacy, 2001 Independence, specializes in diabetic products and education for the diabetic patient.

John's Pharmacy will offer new and expanded programs for diabetics next spring.

Theresa R. Kern, sales associate with ERA Cape Realty, 1409-A N. Mount Auburn Road, has completed the "ERA Selling Skills Workshop."

Included among topics of the training program are market action planning, how to prospect through a contact management system and how to analyze a seller's needs.

Barb Moyers has received the Modern Woodmen of America Camp 5547 Community Service Recognition Award, for outstanding service to the community.

Moyers, care coordinator for Southeast Missouri Hospital, received the award during a meeting held at Ponderosa Steak House in Cape Girardeau.

Modern Woodmen, headquartered in Rock Island, Ill., is a fraternal life insurance society with about 700,000 members nationwide.

Buddy Reeves of Charleston has been named representative with The Prudential Cape Girardeau Agency.

He will serve clients in Charleston and surrounding area.

David Carnell, owner-manager of Carnell's Body Shop in Sikeston, has been awarded the Sam Walton Business Leader Award, sponsored by the Wal-Mart Foundation.

Carnell received the award from Mary Ramsey, manager of the Sikeston Wal-Mart store during the a recent Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce meeting. Carnell was nominated by the Sikeston Chamber for the award.

The Sam Walton Award recognizes outstanding local business leaders in more than 700 Wal-Mart communities.

Fred Neal, broker-owner of Merideth and Neal Real Estate in Sikeston, is 1997 president of the Missouri Association of Realtors.

Neal, who has been an active member of the MAR for 20 years, has served as the organization's vice president and treasurer. He has been an MAR state director for 17 years.

Neal was installed as president by 8th District Rep. Jo Ann Emerson.

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. -- Gary Crittenden has been named president of hardware stores by Sears, Roebuck & Co.

Before joining Sears as executive vice president of strategy and operations a year ago, Crittenden, 43, was vice president and chief executive officer of Melville Corp. of Rye, N.Y.

Last year, Sears launched its new off-the-mall hardware store division. He'll also supervise the retail giant's newly acquired Orchard Supply Hardware stores.

Sears has 180 hardware stores in 19 states and 65 Orchard Supply stores in California.

R. Wayne Nesslein of Cape Girardeau has been appointed senior vice president for Chester Mortgage, a Division of Chester Savings Bank.

Nesslein's appointment was announced by Michael Welge, chairman of the board of the Chester National Bank of Missouri, Perryville.

Nesslein, who has more than 30 years of lending experience in the Southeast Missouri financial industry, is a member of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, Cape Girardeau County Board of Realtors and Southeast Missouri Builders.

Nesslein and Jeff Hawk, will provide loan services in Cape Girardeau, Perry, Scott and Bollinger counties from the Chester Mortgage Division office at 125 S. Broadview Plaza in Cape Girardeau.
