Missouri's nonfarm payroll employment grew by 13,200 jobs in July, according to seasonally adjusted data from the Missouri Department of Economic Development. The state's unemployment rate held at 6.5 percent.
In a recent presentation to Cape County Republican Women, Presiding Commissioner Clint Tracy said the area has a 5.8 percent unemployment rate, with local industries expanding and adding jobs.
"We're fortunate to be in a part of the state that is kind of a hub and we seem to be kind of insulated from what you see going on nationwide," Tracy said. "You don't have the foreclosures and the things that we saw hit the nation's economy hard."
Employment gains were seen in a variety of industries. Among the larger gains in private industries included durable goods manufacturing, adding 3,300 jobs; construction, adding 2,500 jobs; and the transportation, warehousing and utilities sector; which jumped by 2,300 jobs.
The educational services industry added 2,200 jobs in July. Finance and insurance jobs increased by 1,100 during the month.
Missouri's nonfarm payrolls have added 53,600 jobs during the past year.
