Several new businesses highlight this week's commercial landscape in Cape Girardeau, including the announcement of the second tenant in the vacant Kmart building (you may remember we announced April 28 that Orscheln Farm & Home would occupy two-thirds of the building).
We also have an update in this week's Business Notebook about a new restaurant on Broadway that promises a unique menu and dining experience in a building that was once a dry-cleaning operation. We're also happy to acknowledge a number of honors, recognitions and People on the Move in our business notes.
Missouri's first Bargain Hunt store will open in Cape Girardeau in late August, according to a spokesperson of the retail chain operation based in Nashville, Tennessee. The store will be the 91st Bargain Hunt and will occupy approximately 30,000 square feet of the former Kmart building at 11 S. Kingshighway.
Bargain Hunt will share the building with Orscheln Farm & Home. It was announced last month Orscheln will relocate its Cape Girardeau store from Christine Street to the South Kingshighway location and will also open in late summer or early fall.
Bargain Hunt stores feature name-brand apparel, shoes, home decor, grocery items, furniture and appliances at deep discounts, according to company marketing manager Andrea Jacobs.
In addition to an ever-changing assortment of merchandise, Bargain Hunt prices items at 30% to 90% below retail and continues marking down prices every 30 days, she said.
Founded in 2000, Bargain Hunt is described as an "extreme value retail chain" specializing in reverse logistics and closeouts.
Bargain Hunt's existing 90 stores are in 10 states, mostly in the southeastern U.S. The nearest Bargain Hunt outlet is in Paducah, Kentucky.
Although an exact opening date for the new Mary Jane restaurant in Cape Girardeau hasn't been set, owner and creator Carisa Stark said she hopes to open the doors to Mary Jane bourbon + smokehouse within a few weeks.
Located at 1107 Broadway in a building formerly occupied by Courtesy Cleaners, the new dining establishment is being completely remodeled and promises to be a unique restaurants in the region.
Stark, who also owns and operates Mary Jane Burgers & Brew and several other business ventures in Perryville, Missouri, said her new restaurant here will offer "fast casual" dining during the day and a full-service dining experience at night. And although the restaurant's name is similar to her establishment in Perryville, the menu and dining experience will be significantly different, Stark said. The made-from-scratch menu in Cape Girardeau will be built around smoked meats and bourbon-infused sides.
"I'm also striving to have the largest bourbon collection in Southeast Missouri here," she added.
The restaurant's decor can be described as "industrial chic" with exposed metals and dark woods. The restaurant's main entrance is being moved to the west side of the building and there will no longer be an entrance facing Broadway. The second floor of the two-story structure has been redesigned to feature a balcony that will overlook a stylish bar area that will be one of the restaurant's main focal points.
Stark estimates the restaurant will have a seating capacity of about 225.
Hiring for the new eatery has been underway for the past couple of weeks. In the meantime, the menu has been finalized and staff training has begun.
Watch for more information about Mary Jane bourbon + smokehouse once an opening date is announced.
