It's a three-color poster, hand-printed and designed using pieces from the Southeast Missourian's letterpress collection, for the Shipyard Music Festival set for Sept. 22 on Ivers Square and the surrounding area.

The festival will feature seven up-and-coming bands: Jamestown Revival, Vinyl Theatre, A Thousand Horses, *repeat repeat, Royal Teeth, Ryan Corn and Tow'rs. Food and drink vendors will be on site as well.

For an event on this scale, the poster needed to be equally impressive, said Gary Rust II, director of rustmedia, Shipyard's host.

It's not only physically hand-crafted, using a hand-operated press, said Eric Woods, designer and owner of Firecracker Press in St. Louis. The plates used to print each poster were hand-carved in the St. Louis studio, Woods said, one for each color: cyan, magenta and yellow.

Then each poster was printed with each plate, running through the press a total of three times each.

Woods also handled the design.

He has a strong background in both design and printmaking, having studied at the Art Institute of Kansas City after finding an interest in art while in high school in Jackson.

Woods later worked in graphic design, at the Southeast Missourian among other companies, and after he worked at a marketing firm in St. Louis and returned from his honeymoon to find he didn't have a job anymore, that's when he made the leap to owning his own business: Firecracker Press.

That was in 2002. In the years since, Woods and crew have worked to build a business entwining the long history and solid mechanics of printmaking with design elements and an eye to technology.

Where the poster's design was concerned, that meant taking elements from different cuts in the Southeast Missourian collection.

"Every element in that poster comes directly from the day I spent down there going through the paper's archives," Woods said. "Our job was to put it together to tell the story."

And, he said, "it's not easy to take a bunch of disparate elements and put it on a poster and communicate the right thing."

For one thing, the cuts, or original pieces, Woods used were not necessarily the right size for the poster -- the pieces are the size they were originally.

The resizing is done digitally, and the images built into a cohesive whole, then split into their respective color plates, which are then carved and inked and used to print each poster.

"It is a time-consuming process compared to today's 'push a button and watch it come out,'" Woods said, "but we feel very strongly that the time spent is reflected in the final product. People can see it is very special and needs a special place in your life."

Added Rust, "It's a neat partnering with the history of Cape."

The poster will be sold at the festival, and will be included in the VIP ticket package for Shipyard on Sept. 22.
