Census Bureau data show that last March the nation's unemployment rate was 4.7 percent, median household income in 1997 was $37,005, and the proportion of the nation's population in poverty for 1997 was 13.3 percent.

Alaska had the best household income, with a three-year average of $50,829, (1995-1996-1997), ahead of New Jersey, at $47,612. Rounding out the top five states in three-year medium income of households were Maryland at $44,970, Connecticut at $43,151 and Colorado at $42.664.

Missouri's median income for that period was $36,093; Illinois' was $40,613; Kentucky's, $32,668; and Arkansas', $27,031.

The lowest household income in the nation was West Virginia at $26,505, which finished below Arkansas, New Mexico at $27,709 and Mississippi at $27,912.
