The typical American working woman is paid 71 cents for each $1 earned by a man, the Census Bureau says.
Over a lifetime, that can add up to a gap of $420,000, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said Friday. "That money could have bought her a home, educated her children and allowed her to set some money aside for retirement," he said.
He spoke at a news conference marking what President Clinton proclaimed as "National Pay Inequity Awareness Day." It was recognized with a series of forums and rallies across the country.
