But the hundreds of businesses that operated in Cape Girardeau County in the 1990s made most of the area what it is. A listing of most of them brings back memories for many.

U.S. Census information for the period of 1990-2000, which will start being released in March, gives a picture of the business situation throughout the country, including Cape Girardeau County. Businesses also use the information to determine the type of people who live in an area, the available workforce and who will be frequenting their operations.

1990

  • LaBamba Mexican Restaurant opened on Main Street.
  • Wedge's Restaurant opened.
  • Wolohan Lumber Co. purchased Riverside Building Supply and Home Centers.
  • Rumors Inc. closed.
  • Finney's Drug Store on Broadway closed.
  • Sleepy Hollow changed name to Carriage House Furniture Gallery.
  • Advanced Business Systems bought Southeast Telephone Systems Inc.
  • Suedekum Hardware became Meyer Supply.
  • Day Transfer moved to new quarters on Highway 74.
  • Plants Plus opened on Kingshighway.
  • KYRX-FM, Y-105, started operation in West Park Mall.

  • OFMCO opened new and used office furniture store in former Montgomery Ward building, Independence and Main.
  • Shell's Furniture and Collectibles opened at 221A Independence.
  • Frank Klueppel took over OFMCO operation, renaming it Office Furniture World.
  • Champs Sports opened in West Park Mall.

  • The Captain China Liu Restaurant opened at 2123 Broadway.
  • Michael and Merrie Busby opened Helping Hands Computer Service in Cape Girardeau, offering medical claims service, assistance in finding financial aid for college students, and mailbox system.
  • Cape Girardeau Produce and Repackers Inc. began operations.
  • American Lending Group, Inc., a lending institution specializing in purchasing and refinancing residential mortgages, opened branch office at 125 S. Broadview, Suite 2.
  • Sanders Enterprises Inc., a plastics recycling center, opened in Nash Road Industrial Park.
  • SEMO Hardwood Floor Sanding Co., a hardwood-floor sanding, staining and refinishing compnay, opened in Cape Girardeau.
  • First Tire and Wheel Inc., a wholesale tire operation, opened at 99 S. Louisiana.
  • CenterMark Properties Inc., purchased full interest in West Park Mall.
  • Babbage's, a computer software store, opened in Suite 248 in West Park Mall.
  • Reed's Restaurant, owned by Russ Reed, opened at Town House Inn, 505 N. Kingshighway.
  • Sibley's Bargain Books opened at 33 N. Main.
  • A.E. Birk & Son Plumbing & Heating Inc. at Independence and Sprigg, closed after 60 years of business in Cape Girardeau.
  • Patsy Langston, with more than 20 years of experience in hair care, opened Patsy's Family Hair Care at 234 S. Sprigg.
  • Superior Windows, headquartered in Centralia, Ill., opened a facility at 1055 N. Kingshighway.

  • Sprigg Street Medical Center, which for past year served almost 3,000 persons who previously had limited or no access to medical care, closed its doors.

  • Picture Video opened in Cape Girardeau. Business provided video record of old phtographs.
  • Shoney's Inc., headquartered at Louisville, Ky., purchased four Shoney's Restaurants previously operated by DeJoys Inc., headquartered in Cape Girardeau, including restaurant at 171 West Street in Cape Girardeau.
  • Robert Drury, president of Drury Southwest, announced plans for Auburn Park Place, new, high-profile commercial retail complex at southeast corner of Route K and Mount Auburn Road.
  • Horticulturist Anne Foust established Green Gardens, new interior plant maintenance service, in Cape Girardeau.
  • Consolidated Grain & Barge Co., headquarted in Mandeville, La., signed lease with Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority for 16 acres to build grain elevator and barge facility.

  • The Clubhouse, family grill and pub, opened in Plaza Galleria.
  • Klaus & Associates, company that provides landscape architecture, opened in Cape Girardeau.
  • McCombs Funeral Home Inc., Jackson institution for almost 90 years, broke ground in February for second funeral home at 1425 Kurre Lane in Cape Girardeau.
  • West Park Motors Inc. opened in Cape West Business Park.
  • All-American Home Center opened at 1930 Southern Expressway. It is division of McDonald's Mobile Homes, headquarted in Tulsa, Okla.
  • Mid-America Mobile Systems opened at 320 N. Kingshighway.
  • Ryan's Steak House, 10,000-square-foot restaurant with seating for 375 to 400 persons, opened.
  • Instant Replays, men's clothing and sporting goods consignment shop, opened at 114 N. Main.
  • Campster School Antiques opened at 3892 Bloomfield Road in former Campster School, which was built in 1940 by WPA.
  • In a deal reached between Schnucks and the Federal Trade Commission, Schnucks agreed to keep Del-Farm grocery at William and South Sprigg streets open, as well as the Schnucks store at 19 S. Kingshighway.
  • Steve's Sheds and Ray's Pole Barns opened at 7965 Highway 61 North at Jackson.

  • Brauns Fashions Corp. opened new Christopher & Banks Store in West Park Mall, specializing in women's apparel.

  • Prestwick Group was formed to develop gated golf community, with 18-hold golf course, condos, golf club and other recreational facilities, in Cape Girardeau.
  • Kmart stores at three Southeast Missouri sites, including Cape Girardeau, were converted to company's "Big K(mart)" concept.
