Local prayer event moved to next week

Today is World Day of Prayer, a time set aside for churches around the globe to come together in prayer.

Locally a World Day of Prayer service was scheduled to take place today at New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson. The winter weather has forced the gathering to be rescheduled to March 13.

A story in Sunday's Southeast Missourian by Adrienne Ross highlighted the local event that involves six churches.

Organizers said it's for men and women of all ages. The World Day of Prayer organization focuses on promoting "justice and equality for women through prayer, partnerships, service and celebration," according to the website.

The national organization focuses on helping women in sex trafficking, assisting teenage mothers as they continue education and help women with HIV and AIDS, among other ways, according to the story.

There are many things to pray about. Thanking God for his blessings. Seeking his direction in our lives. Asking for wisdom for us and our leaders. And more.

It's important that this event highlights the needs of many women around the world. The offering collected locally will support the primary organization's outreach efforts.

We encourage you to join the international prayer day today in your own home and to consider attending next week's gathering in Jackson.
