Matheny to talk on leadership at Arrow event

Mike Matheny has an impressive resume as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. Three appearances in the National League Championship Series in three years. One National League title and currently in competition for another.

The former catcher-turned-manager is trying to send the reining National League Champions back to the Fall Classic. But regardless of how the season turns out, Mike Matheny has made his mark in baseball and leadership.

Matheny will be in Cape Girardeau on Nov. 17 to speak at the Arrow Leadership and Success Summit, sponsored by Saint Francis Medical Center. The Arrow is the student newspaper of Southeast Missouri State University.

The summit will be held at the Show Me Center. It is an opportunity for students and others on campus along with members of the community to hear from a successful leader. Most would agree that Matheny has earned that reputation not only for his playing career and managerial success but also from his charitable work through his foundation and elsewhere.

The summit begins at 7 p.m. Nov. 17. A VIP reception that includes a meet-and-greet and photo with Matheny is set for 6 p.m. General admission tickets are $10 and VIP tickets are on sale for $99. Note that VIP tickets are selling quickly. Tickets may be purchased through the Show Me Center box office, by calling 651-5000 or online at showmecenter.biz. Sponsorships also are available by calling Gera LeGrand at 388-2741 or sending email to glegrand@semissourian.com.

The summit is part of the Arrow Leadership and Success Series. The series is a 20-week feature in which Arrow editors interview key leaders connected with Southeast Missouri State University or the community. The first interview was with Southeast football coach Tom Matukewicz. The interviews first appear in the Arrow print edition and online at SoutheastArrow.com. You also can read these on the Southeast Missourian Business page on Mondays. We encourage you to follow this series. The Arrow editors are asking good questions that give readers quality information on what makes these individuals successful in leadership.

The St. Louis Cardinals have a large fan base and are sometimes referred to as the best fans in baseball for their baseball knowledge and passion for the team. We believe many will come to the summit because of their affinity for Mike Matheny. That's great. But it will be Matheny's talk that we believe will have people engaged. His message on leadership is one that many should hear.
