A vital resource

Among the bright spots in south Cape Girardeau is the Cape Area Family Resource Center, which provides a variety of community-based programs. With grants running out to operate the center, its board and executive director Pat King are looking for new funding sources to keep the center in operation.

Recently, a six-week summer camp began with 45 participants. The center has been around long enough to have some older role models helping with camp activities. These are youngsters who have taken part in similar activities at the center and want to give something back to younger children.

King says there are plans to continue the center's structured after-school program for the next school year, but ongoing programs will hinge on identifying new funding sources.

The center on South Sprigg Street has faced near-impossible odds before. Somehow, the board and King have managed to keep the center going, because they know how important it is to have such a positive influence in a neighborhood.

Anyone who is interested in learning more about the center or how individuals or groups can help is encouraged to call King at 334-8170. Or visit the center and see how it is making a difference.
