Letter to the Editor

Commandments are our authority

To the editor:

There is no doubt that the Ten Commandments are the basis for all human conduct. Recent comments have degraded the Ten Commandments and questioned their usefulness in today's world, saying they do not coincide with U.S. laws and "the Christian God and Jewish Sabbath."

What would our society be without the Ten Commandments? On what would we base the oath in court? In whose name would the oath be taken? Why are government offices and many businesses closed on Sundays?

Think of the authority in the home, the basic unit of society, and the subsequent authority of civil government. Why is it against the law to murder or commit various acts of adultery, undermining marriage and the home? Why is it against the law to steal, rob, cheat or tell a lie -- especially under oath?

Without the Ten Commandments, society would be in a spiritual vacuum. Our lives, homes, property and families would be under no protection whatsoever. God is a God of order. Thank him for it.
