Marble Hill wins

Never underestimate the impact a small community can have when residents, businesses, organizations and city government unite for a common cause. As a result of just such a coalition in Marble Hill, Mo., the town's Chevrolet dealership will remain open.

Nationwide, dozens of GM dealerships lost their franchises -- and their GMAC financing -- in the wake of the carmaker's reorganization, bankruptcy and takeover by the federal government. Some closed dealerships fought back. Others closed or continued with other new-car lines or used vehicles.

In Marble Hill, the community wanted to save 11 jobs. After letters and petitions, GM officials relented. Just think what Marble Hill could accomplish for the rural county seat if it set its mind to it and joined forces.
