K9 unit still helping with relief effort

To the editor:

In response to the story "Mississippi: In New Orleans' shadow": In September 2005 the Scott County Search and Rescue K9 Unit traveled to Hancock County, Miss., to help with search, rescue and recovery efforts. Once there we were joined by teams from Butler County, Mo., and Stewart County, Tenn. The things we encountered there you can never train for. The destruction we encountered is beyond words, and the task we were given was overwhelming. But I know that most of us would go back in a heartbeat. Currently that is what we are preparing to do but with a different focus this time. The Scott County K9 unit is collecting items to help with the relief efforts going on in Hancock County. Our trailer is almost full, and plans are for us to head that way next week.

We will always hold a place in our hearts for the people of Mississippi who were so good to us even in their hour of need.

KEVIN SHARP, Training Officer, Scott County Search and Rescue K9 Unit
