LETTERS: INMATE QUESTIONS SENTENCING RULES

To the editor:

I would just like to say that I agree with a lot of stuff in Senate Bill 335 (which revises numerous sentencing provisions). But there is a whole lot of other stuff that's not fair to a whole lot of inmates and their families.

Some of the stuff that's not fair is that SB335 doesn't affect prisoners incarcerated in the Department of Corrections.

For instance, I'm doing a 15-year sentence for possessing a large amount of drugs. According to SB335, since I am apparently a chemical-dependent drug addict, I was supposed to be in an alternative program for rehabilitation. Instead, I got no chance for probation. So here I sit with absolutely nothing I can do about it, taking up bed space for a murderer, rapist or child molester. I'm not alone in this situation.
