A handful of bystanders and pedestrians stopped to watch a crew of construction workers as they erected a wooden box around a Confederate States of America monument in Ivers Square on Tuesday, July 7, 2020, in Cape Girardeau. Members of Cape Girardeau City Council voted 6-1 in favor of a motion for “the immediate removal to storage” of the 14-1/2 foot tall white slab marker.
