Johnston is replacing the Rev. John J. Leibrecht, who is retiring as bishop of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau. Leibrecht has served as bishop since 1984.
Johnston will be installed March 31 in Springfield, Mo., becoming the region's sixth bishop.
