VACANT HOME DESTROYED BY FIRE: A vacant home at 538 S. Ellis was destroyed by fire late Tuesday night as firefighters worked to control the blaze and keep it from spreading to neighboring houses. Capt. Paul Lufcy of the Cape Girardeau Fire Department said it's unclear how the fire started. He said the home was "fully engulfed" when firefighters arrived at about 11:10 p.m., but a fire crew of nine men quickly brought the blaze under control. By 11:30 p.m., flames had mostly subsided.
