Tornado aftermath near St. Mary

A powerful tornado killed two people and destroyed several houses near St. Mary, Mo., during the evening of March 11, 2006.

Lindsey Holt, Nicole Richardet and Faye Bohnert, all of Perryville, Mo., helped bag up clothes left in the closet of a house destroyed by a tornado. The tornado hit near St. Mary late Saturday night killing two people and sending many others to the hospital. The women who bagged the clothes did not know the two senior men who had lived in the house but wanted to help salvage the men's belongings before another wave of storms that were predicted to hit the area on Sunday night.

A volunteer helped gather up some personal items from a house destroyed by a tornado.

Family members of tornado victims searched for personal items in the area where several houses and mobile homes were destroyed.
