Southeast Missourian Celebrates 100th Anniversary

The 100th anniversary of the founding of the Southeast Missourian by Fred and George Naeter was celebrated with a block party on Oct. 1, 2005. The building was built in 1925 and named to the National Register of Historic Places earlier this year.

Redmond O'Colonies, American Champion Crier, set the stage for the Southeast Missourian centennial celebration Saturday as newspaper employees dressed in period costumes stood outside the refurbished building at 301 Broadway.

Dennis Stroughmatt and Creole Stomp entertained with Creole/Cajun/Zydeco music at the Southeast Missourian centennial celebration.

Alex Riffle and his band played bluegrass sounds for the centennial.

The Ezell Family performed traditional bluegrass music at the centennial.

Jack Beahan III, a Mark Twain impersonator, talked with Dr. Mike Mapes at the Southeast Missourian centennial celebration.

Tracker, the Southeast Missourian Jr. mascot, greeted children at the centennial celebration.

Alayna Webb, 1 1/2 years old, of Cape Girardeau played a newspaper toss game at the centennial celebration with her mother, Meyoshi Edwards, and game operator Sarah Upchurch.

Connie Litzelfelner served 25-cent popcorn at the block party.

The old-time theme of the Southeast Missourian centennial block party was in contrast with the new Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge.

Antique automobiles on Broadway accented the refurbished exterior of the Southeast Missourian building for its centennial celebration.

Parade Magazine provided a display, "Conversations with America, Parade Through the Decades," for the centennial that was set up next door at Security Bank & Trust.

Cape Girardeau Mayor Jay Knudtson and Jackson Mayor Paul Sander rode in a parade to kick off the Southeast Missourian centennial celebration.

Victoria Collom, 3, stood next to her grandmother, Viney Mosley, at the Common Pleas Courthouse Park gazebo Saturday. Both won first place in their age groups for best costume at the Southeast Missourian centennial celebration.

Wagon rides were popular at the Southeast Missourian centennial block party.

Local magician Bill Coomer performed a magic trick with the newspaper by tearing it into pieces and restoring it.
