A man was taken to a hospital by ambulance to be evaluated for smoke inhalation after a Wednesday afternoon fire in an apartment building on Independence Street, said battalion chief Fred Vincel with the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.
The fire department received a call of a fire in a 1 1/2-story apartment building at 224 Independence St. at 3:32 p.m., Vincel said. The fire was caused by cooking materials left on a stove in a basement apartment.
