TUCSON, Ariz. -- A shelter that asked Rep. Jim Kolbe not to volunteer last Thanksgiving because he is gay welcomed him back.
"It's a great way to spend the day giving something back to the community that's given so much to me," Kolbe said.
About 1,500 people, some homeless and others who couldn't afford a Thanksgiving dinner, showed up at the Gospel Rescue Mission on Wednesday. Kolbe, a Republican, has volunteered at the mission several times, but last year its board voted to ask him not to come.
