August is "Women's Month" at the Red House Interpretive Center. To celebrate the month, a number of events have been planned, several relating to the theme.
- At 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Red House visitors will meet Women in American History. The John Guild Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in period dress, will portray women in American history and tell stories of Revolutionary War women.
- From 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 9, the music of Steve Juhlin's Quittin' Time will be featured. Traditional Scots-Irish and Old Time music from Ireland, the Appalachian Mountains and the Ozark Hills will be performed on the hammered dulcimer, fiddle, guitar, mandolin and Irish flat drum.
- From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 16, women's crafts demonstrated by Heartland Lace Guild. Demonstrations will include Linda Royce cooking over an open fire, Diana Barnes sewing clothing by hand, Deb Baughn constructing rag rugs, Faye Schreiner crocheting, Donna Clark knitting, Rosemary Oxley lap quilting and Carol Koehler making herbal teas. Mimi Higgins will be there in the afternoon to demonstrate drop spinning, cleaning raw cotton for spinning, tatting, making belt looms and weaving scrap yarn and crochet cotton.
- At 10:30 a.m. Aug. 23, there will be storytelling by Dean Allison.
The Red House is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
