G.D. Fronabarger left the Missourian boxes and boxes of negatives. What he didn't leave were IDs for them. Pictures of the Past features some of Frony's images we've partially identified. We're hoping you can help fill in the blanks. Contact librarian Sharon Sanders at ssanders@semissourian.com, if you recognize a place or a face. Mystery Galleries may still be viewed on our History Page, http://www.semissourian.com/history/

Anglers who have stamina enough to brave this cold weather may get results like this pair, Bill Beard, left, and Wayne Freeman of Cape Girardeau, who found the largemouth bass hitting in Castor River Sunday despite near freezing cold and water made colder by melting snow. The pair got these bass, running from 1 1/2 to 3 pounds, on deep-running bomber lures. They took their success to indicate this is going to be a good year for anglers. (Photo by G.D. Fronabarger)

This huge black oak tree, estimated at more than 250 years old, fell last week during a windstorm. Shown beside it is Russell Fowler, on whose property it stands at rear 327 Morgan Oak street. The tree stood over 100 feet tall and had a spread of better than 150 feet. Two feet above the ground, it was 20 feet in circumference and a number of its limbs were more than three feet in diameter. The tree fell because, through the years, its trunk had been hollowed by disease to the point where it could not carry the tremendous weight in a high wind. Mr. Fowler said anyone who wishes to cut wood from its limbs or trunk may do so upon contacting him at his home. (G.D. Fronabarger/Southeast Missourian archive)
