Pictures of the Past #8

The combined Federal Building and Cape Girardeau post office stood at the southeast corner of Broadway and Fountain Street from 1910-67.

April 12, 1960 Southeast Missourian. Lots of exercise goes into the Girl Scout program and, for this reason, many variations of activity are provided. Sept. 6, 1955 Southeast Missourian. School trek begins. All over the city thousands of pupils converged on the community’s schools today as the fall term opened. Here, a group crosses a safety lane on Independence street to Lorimier School under the watchful eye of School Boy Patrolman Dennis Pfyffe, a sixth grader, who stands at the right. By the calendar on the wall, we know this picture was made in June 1961. Sally Wright Owen helped with a partial ID: "The girl on the left is Vicky Berry. The other girl (might????) be me, but I don't think I ever looked that studious." Ken Steinhoff added: "OK, you made me drag out the 1965 Girardot. The boy on the right is Charlie Baldwin; John Brown is on his left. That IS Sally."

June 14, 1957 Southeast Missourian. This group of Cape Girardeau youths went by bus to Warrensburg on Saturday to join others from over Missouri for the annual Boys State event sponsored by the American Legion.
