Pictures of the Past #75

Band director Leroy Mason of State College appraised one of the new uniforms the college band members were to wear in 1958. Jim Rhodes of Jackson, student band president, modeled the attractive uniform, the main color of which was blue, with white belts and gold cape flowing back off the shoulder.

Two unidentified men looked over a lake. Perhaps they were selecting a likely fishing spot?

Archery was a popular sport in Cape Girardeau in the 1950s and '60s. Harold Hager wrote: "I think the man on the far left is (Ellis) Trickey. Not positive on first name. He used to work for the University (State College then) in the dormitory office. He may have lived at the northeast corner of Benton and Good Hope."

This overflow crowd was assembled in the auditorium of old Central High School for an unknown event.

A long line of cars was headed west on Independence Street in this photo. It may have been taken during the city's sesquicentennial celebration in 1956 when the street was changed to one-way traffic for the occasion.

Oct. 9, 1963 Southeast Missourian. Nutritious lunches will be served to some 16 million children daily this year under the National School Lunch program. One of the functions of the program is to provide training in sound food habits. First graders of Miss Ethel Unterreiner’s room are being served in Alma Schrader School cafeteria. This photo, published Dec. 1, 1958, shows a 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 after it crashed into Thompson's Drive-In, 324 N. Kingshighway. Here is the caption: "This car glanced into the Thompson establishment on Highway 61 just south of the Broadway junction early Sunday night, doing considerable damage. The driver was Earl Crites Jr., 34, of Cape Girardeau who was going south. He said a car in front of him started to the left when Crites was about to pass and there was a minor collision. The Crites car then went eastward and nosed into the building."
