Local go-kart enthusiasts built a track near the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport and in 1961 hosted "world-champion go-kart racing" sponsored by The World's International Kart Association. It was said to be one of the finest kart tracks in the nation.

For the first time in the history of the Southeast Missouri Area Council of Boy Scouts, horsemanship has become a part of the summer camping program at Camp Lewallen on St. Francis River. Above, The Missourian photographer caught a group of scouts on horses owned by the council and quartered in the camp’s corral. Camp Ranger Henry Hefner directs the program, teaching youngsters how to ride safely, and scouts eagerly wait in line to get their turn on the wooded Ozark trails. (G.D.
