G.D. Fronabarger left the Missourian boxes and boxes of negatives. What he didn't leave were IDs for them. Pictures of the Past features some of Frony's images we've partially identified. We're hoping you can help fill in the blanks. Contact librarian Sharon Sanders at ssanders@semissourian.com, if you recognize a place or a face. Mystery Galleries may still be viewed on our History Page, http://www.semissourian.com/history/

This photo may have been taken in 1956, when Ward's Big Stare opened at Broadway and Kingshighway. Bill Stone wrote: "It is hard to tell on my computer as I can't make the photo larger but the gentleman on the left is Eddie Mayhew (he would be wearing glasses), long time butcher at Ward's Big Star. I can't recognize the rest."

A sign in the background of this photo seems to identify it as Leon W. Brennecke's Standard service station on the west side of U.S. 61. Bill Stone wrote: "Brennecke's Service Station was located several hundred yards further north of the Arena Park entrance. By the mid-1960s, that building was razed and replaced by another Phillips 66 station. I would have to look at the current building on that site to see if it is the same building or a newer one. The last time I noticed it there was still a convenience store in that location."

Today’s one-below-zero blast sent Girardeans shivering about their jobs. Among them, Burl Nedlock, had one of the coldest jobs as he tested a customer’s car for antifreeze compound at a filling station. (G.D. Fronabarger/Southeast Missourian archive)
