Water safety is a must in most scouting activity and these Intermediate Girls Scouts in the Day Camp on Cape Rock Drive learn the how of canoeing on the lake on the estate of Dr. and Mrs. Milton Shoss. The Cape Girardeau A&P store has been judged a unit winner in the food organization’s nationwide “Honor Stores Awards” and each of its employees has been awarded a valuable gift. The store here was winner of the 107-store St. Louis unit. Similar contests were conducted in other units over the country. Unit officers selected the store here over others in the St. Louis area on the basis of reports sent in weekly by district supervisors. Manager Russell Richards said the contest was based on better service and increased courtesy to customers, improved cooperation and teamwork among store personnel, improved store appearance and general cleanliness and order, better and more efficient store operation, increased and more satisfactory sales results. Rueseler's Motor Co., a Chevrolet agency, was located at 225 N. Fountain St. Fred Lynch found this image in the December 15, 1954, edition of the Missourian: "Formal presentation of a new Chevrolet automobile she won in a national slogan contest sponsored by the Helene Curtis company was made the other day to Mrs. Joe Burciaga by representatives of a distributor company. Also presented was a diamond-studded wrist watch to Miss Julie Birk through whose beauty shop Mrs. Burciaga entered the contest. Shown in the picture at the presentation, from left, are: Mack Stein of the distributor agency; Miss Birk, Mrs. Burciaga, Les Inger, owner of the distribution agency, and Vinson Rueseler, Chevrolet dealer who delivered the car."

These girls had their individual containers of things they needed and were checking them over to see that everything was at hand. In the background two others from this group, Unit 7, were carrying water. The Day Camp for the Brownies was at the Dr. Milton Schoss place on Cape Rock Drive.
