May 2, 1963 Southeast Missourian. A flag for a slogan, James "Jim" Reynolds, Central High School junior, receives a flag from Jerry Wilkening, Americanism chairman for the VFW post here for submitting the best Americanism slogan. The contest was sponsored by Post 3838. Looking on are John Penn, left, post commander, and Calvin Vogelsang, state commander. (G.D. The flag was one of two that had flown over the nation's capitol in Washington that were presented to city schools, the other at Trinity Lutheran School, as part of the Loyalty Day observance.

These second graders at Franklin School, taught by Mrs. Irma Ward, are engaged this week in a zoo study project, and here they have models of animals in improvised cages and cut-out figures on the walls. These beginners are discovering what reading is by reading their second pre-primer under direction of the teacher, Mrs. Joy Haney.
