Handing over the final toll on the cost of the Mississippi River bridge at Cape Girardeau in 1957 didn't happen by accident. Jerry Burchyett, then a pie salesman from McClure, Ill., said he planned it. "I paid off the bridge," recalled Burchyett, now a resident of St. Louis.
